Ecodesign requirements for sustainable products and digital product passport

On June 28, 2024, Regulation (EU) 2024/1781 establishing a framework for the setting of ecodesign requirements for sustainable products was published in the Official Journal of the European Union.

Digital Product Passport: the regulation introduces the concept of a digital product passport, which will play a central role in customs procedures. This passport must contain essential information about the sustainability, reliability, repairability, reusability, and recyclability of products. The product passport serves as a detailed record of the ecological footprint and the conformity of products with sustainability requirements.

Connection with Customs Systems: the digital product passport will be integrated with customs systems, meaning that customs authorities will have access to relevant information about products being imported into the EU. This information will assist in more efficient customs checks and risk management associated with product imports.

Transparency and Traceability: with the digital product passport, customs authorities will be able to easily verify whether products meet the ecological design requirements as set out in the regulation. This increases the transparency and traceability of products throughout their entire lifecycle, contributing to the enforcement of environmental regulations.

Conclusion

The implementation of Regulation (EU) 2024/1781 will bring significant changes to customs procedures within the EU. The digital product passport plays a crucial role in these changes by providing extensive information on the sustainability and compliance of products.
