Abolition of Swiss customs duties

UPDATE: Postponement of the voting led to a delayed parliamentary deliberation. The tariff elimination
expected to come into effect on January 1, 2024.

After years of political debate on this subject, Switzerland will finally do away with customs duties on the import of industrial products.
This would come into effect in the first half of 2022 (exact date is still subject to change).

In practical terms, this means that when industrial products are imported into Switzerland, a preferential proof of origin (EUR.1 certificate or origin declaration) will no longer have to be presented in order to be able to claim the reduced rate (or zero duty); the tax rate will, in any case, be 0%, even without such proof of EU origin.

If goods are not further processed in Switzerland and are definitively imported there, such preferential proof of origin will in principle have no benefit. It may be advisable to discuss this with your Swiss customer(s).

As soon as you no longer have a EUR.1 certificate endorsed or make an origin declaration, this will have the additional advantage that the export movements to Switzerland can from then on be considered as discharges of liability in the context of an authorization for placing goods under the inward processing procedure.

Other normal import formalities in Switzerland will stand, nor will there be any changes to the export formalities that take place in the EU.
